One of our regular contributors (who wanted to remain anonymous for this entry) recently told me that he married the granddaughter of Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Outside New York this name may not resonate as much as it does within, and in labor circles in the Big Apple, the Van Arsdale name is legendary. I rememebered how teachers in high school told us about Van Arsdale's accomplishments as a labor leader, and how there was a high school named after him and a labor center in Albany, but I have to admit, my recollections are sketchy at best. Strong achievements. With all the protection and benefits that unions have historically offered workers, it is amazing that some workers lately have chosen to reject organizing so that they can keep getting exploited by their employers. Van Arsdale has helped give workers the benefits mentioned above. I wonder how aware non union employees at Wal-Mart, for example, are of what organizing can do for them. Business has always tried to squash organizing employees, but it shocks me nonetheless that even workers being treated like total shit by the Wal-Mart's of the world still choose oppression over organization.
